She spent her early years in two small towns in northern Wisconsin, graduating from New Richmond High School in 1949.

Joseph Elden Cullen was born on February 24, 1940 to Laurence 'Tut' Elden Cullen and Edna Talbott Cullen in Ronan, Montana.
