Robert K. Young
COLUMBIA – Robert K. Young, 97, of Columbia, died on Friday morning, Sept. 6, 2024, at the Coös County Nursing Hospital in West Stewartstown, after a prolonged period of declining health.
He was born on Jan. 16, 1927, in West Stewartstown, a son to the late Elwin G. and Jerry (French) Young. He attended schools both locally and in Peabody, Mass. He was drafted into the U.S. Navy towards the end of World War II, and after his service he attended UNH and earned a degree in electrical engineering.
Robert worked for American Machine & Foundry for 20 years before he returned to the north country. He then taught advanced mathematics in the vocational program at Canaan Memorial High School for seven years. After his tenure teaching in Canaan, he joined Holman Forbes and traveled to Saudi Arabia to work for Aramco as a teacher for eight more years before returning again to the north country.
He was responsible, along with Ruby Wallace, in establishing the Pioneer Farm Educational Trust. Ruby and Robert provided the funding to preserve the Wallace Farm in Columbia.
Robert loved to tie flies, flyfish, hunt, tinker and build things
Robert leaves behind his long-time companion, Ruby Wallace, and his son, Stephen M. Young, as well as two granddaughters, Jaime Valentine of Gainesville, Va., and Krystle Young of Fort Collins, Colo., and four great-grandchildren, Stephen, Henry and Charlotte Valentine, and Finn Mulligan. He is predeceased by his wife, Ione (Wallace) Young, and a daughter, Nancy Lee.
