William George Fick, Jr.

William George Fick, Jr., a resident of Pennybryn at Maryfield, passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2013, at High Point Regional Health System, following and extended illness.

He was born February 23, 1930 in Passaic, New Jersey, the son of William George Fick and Ella Hesse Fick.

After graduation from high school, he attended Duke University receiving a B. S. in chemistry in 1952. While at Duke he was a member of Tau Beta Phi honorary fraternity and Phi Kappa Psi. He was also Managing Editor of The Chronicle.

He served three years aboard the USS Telfair ATA 210 during the Korean Conflict, retiring as a Lieutenant jg.

Following his service in the U.S. Navy, he attended the University of Texas at Austin where he earned a B. S. degree with honors in petroleum engineering.

Joining Exxon Mobil, he was assigned to a post Sumatra, Indonesia. Thereafter he was also with their affiliate Creole Petroleum, in Tia Juana, Venezuela, and later with Aramco in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. After 33 years with Exxon Mobil, he retired as a senior engineer and made his home in High Point, where he was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. In his retirement years, he became an exceptional gardener and cook, and was an active community volunteer.

He is survived by his wife, Vera Floyd Fick of Pennybyrn, a daughter Carolyn Shelby and her husband, Mark C. Shelby, of High Point; a son, William George Fick III and his wife, Kristin Hondros, of Chapel Hill; and three grandchildren: Emma Elizabeth Shelby of Raleigh, Evan Cooper Shelby of High Point, and Josephine Astrid Fick of Chapel Hill. He also leaves many beloved nieces, nephews, and special friends from all over the world.

He was pre-deceased by both parents and by a sister, Betty Fick; a brother, David W. Fick, both of High Point; and a brother, Theodore L. Fick, of Anderson, S.C.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 28th, from 3 until 5 pm, in the Multi-Purpose Room at Pennybryn at Maryfield.

The family would like to thank the Doctors and staff of Cornerstone Heart Function and Internal Medicine Clinics for their care and concern, shown to Mr. Fick during his illness.
