Vivian Barretto
Vivian Barretto, M.D., a retired physician died at his home in New Orleans on Sunday, April 1, 2012 after a lengthy illness at the age of 91. Born in Nagpur, India on Feb 7,1921 to Dr. Christopher Barretto and Julia Siqueira Barretto. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dr. Mary Rose "Muriel" Barretto. Dr. Barretto graduated from Grant Medical College, Bombay, India in 1948. He trained in surgery at JJ Hospital and also served as a lecturer in Anatomy from 1951 to 1956. In 1957 Dr. Barretto moved with his family to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia where he served as an obstetrician and General Physician with the Arabian American Oil Co. During that time he served as an attending physician to the Ibn Saud Royal family. He completed a fellowship in Ob/Gyn at the Rotunda Hospital/Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland in 1965. Dr. Barretto emigrated with his family to the United States in 1968 settling in Marblehead, Massachusetts. After completing his residency training in internal medicine and pathology at Salem Hospital, he began practicing emergency medicine at Salem Hospital in Salem, Massachusetts and primary care medicine at Tewksbury State Hospital, Salem House of Corrections and Jail and Boston University Student Health Services in Boston, Massachusetts. He practiced full time until 1998 when he moved with his wife to New Orleans to be close to family. An accomplished athlete Dr. Barretto captained his medical school soccer, field hockey and track teams. Later in life he became an avid tennis player winning the Saudi Aramco Middle East Men's Doubles Championship. Survivors include three sons Anil Barretto of Nashua, New Hampshire: Girin Barretto of Washington D.C.; Mario Barretto (Susan and children, Dustin and Peter Winter) of St. Louis, Missouri; a daughter Maryanne Vivian Pranikoff (Lincoln) of New Orleans, and two grandsons Jack Pranikoff of New Orleans and Max Barretto of Dallas, Texas. He is also survived by four brothers; Terence Barreto of Nagpur, India, Cecil Barretto, Noel Barretto (Marie Louise)and Christopher Barretto of Goa, India and a sister Vilma Miranda (Mario) of Bangalore, India as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank his caregivers Shirley Mellor, Annie Fulford and Leroy Langford. A funeral will be held Saturday, April 7, 2012 at 11am at St. Henry's Church, 813 General Pershing St, New Orleans. Visitation will begin at 10am.
