Vila Newell van Huben
Mr. Leslie van Huben is sad to report the death of his beloved wife, Vila N. Holt van Huben. Vila passed from this life peacefully on Tuesday, December 14, 2010, in Prince William Hospital, Manassas, VA after a short illness.
Born in Burlington, NC in 1913, Vila celebrated her 97th birthday in November this year. Along with Les, she is survived by her sister, Blondell Myrick of Greensboro, NC, her son, Newell Holt of Danville, VA, two grandsons, William Holt and Graham Holt, both of Greensboro, NC and a nephew, William "Marty" Newell of Burlington, NC. She was pre-deceased by her first husband, Eugene Holt and her brother, William Newell of Burlington, NC. Vila had several extended relatives throughout North Carolina and step-children, step-grandchildren and great step-grandchildren in the van Huben family.
After growing up in Burlington, NC, Vila married Eugene Holt and lived in Graham and Greensboro, NC. She had a successful career as a textile designer with Burlington Industries and was a volunteer at Wesley Long Hospital and an active member of the Altrusa Club in Greensboro.
Vila married Les van Huben in 1974 and lived in Houston, TX, Dharhan, Saudi Arabia, Wilmington, NC, Manassas, VA, Greensboro, NC, and Forest, VA. They traveled the world while Les was based in Saudi Arabia with Aramco. When not traveling, Vila pursued her many interests through volunteer work. She tutored grade school students, taught reading to illiterate adults, worked with Meals on Wheels and wrote her own short stories. Vila was very active in the Presbyterian Church in Wilmington and later in the Manassas Presbyterian Church in Virginia. She was also a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, NC, and the Forest Presbyterian Church in Forest, VA.
Her long life, her association with the Presbyterian churches in her community and her extensive travels left Vila with friends in numerous states and several countries. She will be deeply missed by all.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, January 15, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at the Manassas Presbyterian Church in Manassas, VA and on Saturday, January 22, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Vila's name to one of the Presbyterian churches she loved and served so well.
