Mary E. Herring
Mary E. Herring, mother of Nancy E. Taylor, formerly of Dhahran, passed away on March 14, 2014, in Arroyo Grande, California, at the age of 100. Mary visited Saudi Arabia eleven times while her daughter and family were living there. All told, she spent several years in Dhahran and was a mother figure to many in the community. ~Bob Taylor
EATON, OH - Mary E. Herring, formerly of Eaton, Ohio, died Friday, March 14, at the Arroyo Grande Care Center, Arroyo Grande, California, after a brief illness. She was born April 27, 1913, in Gnadenhutten, Ohio, to Warren A. and Frances E. (Webb) Spring and had lived most of her life in Preble County, Ohio.
She attended Western College for Women and was graduated from Miami University with B.S. in Education and M.Ed. degrees. She was a retired school teacher, having taught in the Dayton Public Schools for 3 years and in the Eaton Public Schools for 36 years. After retirement, she continued as a substitute teacher in the Eaton school system for 24 more years---until age 92 ½.
She was a member of the Eaton United Church of Christ; the Retired Teachers' Association; Delta Kappa Gamma, a teachers' sorority; an honorary member of the local Omicron Sigma sorority; and an 83-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Her husband, John A. Herring, Sr., died August 31, 1963. Survivors include one son, John A. (Kathy) Herring, Jr. of Eaton; one daughter, Nancy E. (Robert) Taylor of Pismo Beach, California; three grandchildren, Gregory Herring of Greenville, North Carolina; Deborah Taylor Sonntag of Fort Myers, Florida; and Gayle Taylor Parkin of Bloomfield, New Jersey; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 12:00 noon on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at the Girton Schmidt & Boucher Gard Funeral Home, 226 West Main Street, Eaton, with the Rev. Roger Stine officiating. Burial will be in Mound Hill Cemetery, Eaton. The family will receive friends on Friday, March 21, 2014 from 3:00 to 6:00 pm and one hour prior to services on Saturday both at the funeral home.
