Linda Stefan
1,322 Pieces of Fabric
Behind the Dhahran Compound gate
There lived a quilter known as Linda Stefan -
she was our mate.
She had one son, a boy named Russell;
And daughter Jana, a lovely belle.
One husband Lorne, and one house
One cat named Tibbets and (we think) one little mouseā¦
And 1,322 pieces of fabric.
DOQG Quilt Guild Member Linda Stefan hailed from Western Canada, came to Saudi Arabia in 1985, lived in Udhailiyah, Abqaiq (for 20 years!) and finally Dhahran, a quilter of note and a dear friend of many. From an early age she was a self taught sewer, crafts person and quilter, and she carried that tradition into the present-day, until disabled by cancer she was no longer able to hold a needle. Her spirit lives on in her handiwork.
In 2006 the last quilt that Linda worked on before she passed away, 'Fall Leaves', was completed by her quilting friends and placed in the DOQG Annual Quilt Show. It won first prize in the Traditional category. Unfortunately Linda passed away before the Show and her blue ribbon was presented to her husband Lorne.
In memory of Linda Stefan and her life long commitment in the art of quilting, DOQG members rallied together and made a quilt in her memory using fabrics from Linda's own stash. Tickets for the 'Linda Stefan Memorial Quilt' are on sale by DOQG members and will also be available at the upcoming SAEA Fun Fest. All monies raised from the Linda Stefan Memorial Quilt ticket sales will be donated to the BC Cancer Foundation Vancouver Island, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
