Leon Edward Voronyak
Leon E. Voronyak, age 67 of Freeport. IL, and formerly of the South Elmdale and the Upsala, MN area, passed away Thursday, December 21, 2006 at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison, WI. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 29, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. at the Emblom-Brenny Funeral Service (Upsala Chapel) in Upsala, MN. Friends may call from 10:00-11:00 A.M., Friday, December 29, 2006 at the Emblom Brenny Funeral Service (Upsala Chapel) in Upsala, MN. Interment will be in the Russian Orthodox Cemetery in South Elmdale, MN.
Leon Edward Voronyak was born March 9, 1939 in Bowlus, Morrison Cty, MN to the late Edward and Irene (Chuba) Voronyak. He grew up in the South Elmdale area. Leon attended Upsala High School where he played football and track. He graduated with the Class of 1957. Leon served in the United States Marine Corps from 1957 to 1959. Returning from the military, he attended St. Cloud State University and the University of Minnesota graduating in 1966, with a degree in Civil Engineering. He was united in marriage on May 14, 1960 to Marcia Johnson. Leon and Marcia had two sons, Craig born in 1960 and Tom born in 1964. The family lived in Minneapolis, Milwaukee, WI, Green Bay, WI, Chicago, IL and Rockford, IL. The couple later divorced. Leon eventually moved to Freeport, IL and kept Freeport his primary residence where he resided until his death. Leon worked for Mobil Oil Corporation, Sjostrom Construction of Rockford, IL, Freeport Construction of Freeport, IL, Aramco in Saudi Arabia, PPG of Milwaukee, WI and Parson's Construction in Saudi Arabia from February of 1997 thru April of 2001. During his overseas employment, Leon visited many countries in Europe, Asia and Africa.
Leon enjoyed golfing, tennis, spending time with family and friends, traveling, reading his favorite magazine, Roads and Bridges, and spending countless hours on his many computers. He enjoyed his work and the many construction projects he worked on. Leon spent a lot of his time investing and playing the market in his retirement years.
Leon is survived by his son, Thomas "Tom" Voronyak & wife, Kimberly, of St. Cloud, MN; brothers, Dan Voronyak & wife, Wendy, of Burtrum, MN and Robert "Bob" Voronyak of Orono, MN. He was preceded in death by his son, Craig, in April of 1987; parents; sister, Marlene Voronyak, in October of 1958 and two infant brothers.
