Daniel was born to Theadore and Mariam (Wahl) Barbee November 7, 1937, in Petersburg, Illinois. He graduated with a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1964, where he met Ruth, his wife of 48 years. Following graduation, the young couple headed off to Saudi Arabia to work for a couple years in the oil business, before rejoining academia in 1966, at the University of North Dakota. Daniel later joined the faculty in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Texas A&M in 1969. In 1972, Daniel left the University to re-join the Arabian American Oil Company (now Saudi Aramco), from which he retired in 1987 as Vice President of Project Management. During Daniel's Aramco career he oversaw the construction of crude-oil facilities as well as hospitals, schools, and housing. In retirement, Daniel enjoyed working in his garden, writing, and traveling. To the surprise and delight of many, he also discovered the fun of ballroom dancing.
Daniel is survived by his wife, Ruth (Renken) Barbee; son, Scott Barbee; daughter, Carol Barbee Meijers; sister, Bonnie Angel; and four grandchildren, Ben and Jacob Meijers and Sabine and Madeline Barbee.
