Elias Haramis Lazaros
Elias Haramis Lazaros, 87, died December 1st. He was born in Athens, Greece in 1916. In 1954 he married Eugenia Stathis, a Jacksonville native, who predeceased him in 1995, and they continually resided in Jacksonville. He was educated in Europe, holding Masters degrees in electrical and mechanical engineering and was licensed as an engineer by the State of Florida. He had a long career with local firms such as Gibbs Shipyards and Reynolds, Smith & Hills and was involved with many notable international and local building, naval, and aviation projects. These included the Jacksonville and Tampa airports, the Walt Disney World complex, the vehicle assembly building at the Kennedy Space Center and projects for Aramco in Saudi Arabia. He had been active in civic and social affairs and was a member of Ye Mystic Revellers, a past charter member of the University Club, a past member of the Ponte Vedra Club, Selva Marina Country Club, the Quarterback Club, the Symphony Assn., Cummer Ga llery of Art, and the Gator Bowl Assn. He was a member of Saint John the Divine Greek Orthodox Church and was active on the Building Committee and Parish Council. He was also on the Building Committee for the Saint Photios National Greek Orthodox Shrine, St. Augustine, Fla. and a past member of the AHEPA. During World War II, as part of the resistance, he escaped the Nazi occupation, rescuing several others in the process. He became attached to the RAF and piloted aircraft and fought for the Allies. He is survived by his brother, Kornelius Haramis, and sister Fofo Berry both of Port Charlotte, Fla., his daughter Terry H. Hirsig , son Lee S. Haramis, both of Jacksonville and four grandchildren Leslie Hirsig, Lawrence M. Hirsig II, Lee S. Haramis, Jr. and Allison Haramis. A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery on Monday December 8 at 10:00AM, the Reverend Nicholas Graff officiating. Hardagegiddens Funeral Home, 729 S. Edgewood Ave.
