Dr. Wray J. Tomlinson
Dr. Wray J. Tomlinson, 58, the company's chief pathologist for nearly 10 years, died unexpectedly early Monday evening, Jan. 12. Memorial services were conducted Wednesday, Jan. 14, at the Dhahran Theater.
Dr. Tomlinson took his bachelor's degree in pre-medical studies at Washington College in Chestertown, Md., and was awarded his M.D. in 1935 by Temple University School of Medicine, where he subsequently spent four years as a Fellow in Pathology and Bacteriology. In 1940, Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, Calif., named him director of laboratories, the position he was later to occupy at the Veterans' Hospital in Denver, St. Joseph's Hospital in Mitchell, S.D., and St. Luke's Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla. He served during World War II as a pathologist with the U.S. Army in the Panama Canal Zone.
Dr. Tomlinson was in private practice for the five years preceding his Aramco affiliation. He joined the company in May of 1960 to assume the duties of chief of Pathology Services at the Dhahran Health Center. In this capacity, Dr. Tomlinson served not only in pathology and tissue study but in developing one of the finest clinical laboratories in this part of the world. Dr. Tomlinson's laboratory provided service not only to Aramco but to many other hospitals and government agencies, benefitting countless patients.
A Fellow of the American Medical Association and a Founding Fellow of the College of American Pathologists, Dr. Tomlinson was also a member of the American Society for Experimental Pathololgy, the American Society of Pathlologists and Bacteriologists, the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the International Academy of Pathlogy. In addition, he maintained membership in the Medical Association of Georgia and the Georgia Association of Pathologists.
Survivors include his widow, Jane, and two daughters, both of whom formerly lived in Dhahran. Bebe, now Mrs. F. Van Zalingen, lives with her husband and child in Jiddah, and Cynthia and her husband, James R. Colvin, parents of two, make their home in Ohio.
