Join us as we celebrate our dear friend and longtime contributor Tor Eigeland, 92, who died last week. Tor set sail from his hometown of Oslo, Norway in 1947 at age 16, and he never looked back. In his 20s he transitioned from sailor to journalist where he took photos and wrote stories for publications such as AramcoWorld, National Geographic, Newsweek and Time. He traveled across the globe—bringing the world closer to all of us.
As one of our most prolific contributors, Tor photographed his last AramcoWorld assignment in Tangier, Morocco in 2016.
Learn more about Tor in the story “50 Years Behind the Lens” linked below.
50 Years Behind the Lens
In 1966, a Norwegian-born, Mexico-educated, Beirut-resident photographer and journalist named Tor Eigeland took his first assignment for this magazine. Since then, his byline has appeared more than 50 times on some of our most popular stories from around the globe. Here, he reflected on a few of his—and the editors’—favorite images.
Occasionally, when I get a really good shot, I can feel it. It’s almost like getting goosebumps. “This is too beautiful to be real. How did this happen? How was I so lucky to be here?”
— Tor Eigeland
