Dr. Zakiya Ayo-Zahra Seymour, PhD, P.E. (daughter of the late Cornell T. Seymour and Shirley E. Seymour), was inducted into the Civil and Environmental Engineering 2022 Academy of Distinguished Alumni, U.C. Berkeley on Thursday, April 27, 2023. The ceremony was held at the California Memorial Stadium on the campus of U. C. Berkely. Dr. Seymour obtained her Master of Science in Civil (Environmental) Engineering from U.C. Berkeley in 2006.
The notation for her being awarded this distinguished honor stated, “For progressive experience in research, problem-solving and leading teams on large scale, data-driven projects with multi-sector leadership in industry, academia, governmental agencies, and non-governmental organizations; for academic and policy thought leadership including participation on the Board of the Southern Environmental Law Center; and for her engagement with Berkely Civil and Environmental Engineering on curriculum-building on Social Justice in Engineering and Inclusive Infrastructure.” She was one of eight inductees into the Class of 2022.
Dr. Seymour obtained her PhD from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia, and is a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E). Dr. Seymour spent her early years growing up in Abqaiq, Saudi Arabia, and attended Abqaiq School. Attending the ceremony with her were her mother Shirley Seymour, a former nurse who worked at Abqaiq Health Center for approximately 15 years (Abqaiq, Aramco 1980-2013), Michael Sweet (uncle) Stephanie Sweet (aunt) and Jeremy Bryant (friend). She is currently a Vice President at Arcadis - a multinational engineering design and consulting firm - and serves as the Workforce / Business Transformation Lead in North America.
