The mission of the Arts Department is to empower all students to discover and foster their creativity by giving them skills and tools to develop and explore their own personal self-expression.
Marvelwood strives to create an open and encouraging artistic environment.
Our dedicated arts faculty and talented students allow us to have a supportive arts community. While attending Marvelwood, students have the option to express their talent in studio art, music, theatre, photography, and film. For four consecutive years, Marvelwood films have been selected for the National Film Festival. Our Film Studies students produced a short documentary highlighting one of the United Nations Global Initiatives and received an Award-Winning Film Production.Students also have the opportunity to take part in Theatre. Performers, stage crew, and theatre technicians work together on two productions each year. While off-campus, students are given the chance to visit local art galleries and performing art theatres.
Music is an integral part of the Marvelwood experience. More than one-third of the student body participates in the music program either via curriculum or extracurricularly, and instruction is offered at all levels of ability — from those just getting started to those with considerable experience. From jazz to chamber music, from voice to strings, there is always an attentive audience for numerous group and individual performances. Private music study is offered in selected areas as well.
Marvelwood's location, pond-side atop Skiff Mountain, inspires community, friendship, and learning. The dormitories, clustered in a semi-circle next to Lucy's Pond, are spacious and airy with large common rooms for social gathering and studying. Dorm parents supervise students in each dorm and organize activities, from game nights to baking to scavenger hunts. Each dorm, Summit, Sterling, Lake, and Star, is truly a student's home away from home, and faculty ensure a sense of home is nurtured in each dorm. Our dorms, which were fully renovated in 2018, are adjacent to Kent Land Trust acreage, and some rooms have views of the playing fields across the pond.
At Marvelwood, student activities, clubs, special trips and events are built right into the structure of the week to allow students the opportunity to share their talents and interests and to have fun with friends and faculty. Students are encouraged to contribute to planning the activity calendar by creating new clubs or proposing trips, weekend activities, games and other events that promote student interaction and entertainment.
Our students explore their passions, discover beyond their imaginations, grow beyond their expectations, and achieve their own definition of exceptional.
Discover Marvelwood and discover what inspires you.
