Thomas Richard Furse Sr
A gathering will be held Monday, January 6, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Northeast United Methodist Church, 4000 Hard Scrabble Rd, Columbia, to celebrate the life and Christian service of Thomas Richard Furse, Sr.
Tom began his life's journey in Summerton, SC on February 18, 1935. From an early age he enjoyed the challenge of mathematics. He was particularly fascinated with the development of the computer.
After graduating from Wofford College, Phi Beta Kappa, in 1958, he began a distinguished career in data processing. He retired in 1991, after being employed with ARAMCO in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia where he managed the Exploration and Petroleum Engineering Computer Center.
After retirement, Tom spent many happy hours with good friends on the golf course. He gave of his time and talents to: Emmaus of the Midlands, Salkehatchie Summer Service at Black Swamp, Washington Street Soup Kitchen, Killingsworth Home, Salvation Army, American Red Cross and Summit Homeowners Association.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mary; children, Richard (Laurie) Furse, Janet (Greg) Boswell, and Betsy (Doug) Meade; grandchildren, Will (Jessica), Ben ( Kelsey), Brittany, Stuart, Alex, Matt, Michael, Marybeth, and Bradley; great grandchildren, Ellie, Madison, and Mac; sister, Juanita Calhoun. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Fannie; youngest daughter, Mary Ann; brother, Charles; and sister, Margaret Lawson.
