Tawanah Elizabeth Williams
Tawanah Elizabeth Williams, wife of Robert O. Williams of Producing and Water Injection, died at her home on Sept. 4. Memorial services were held in Dhahran on Sept. 12.
Born in Ada, Okla., Tawanah bore the Chickasaw Indian name meaning "courageous daughter." She completed her education at East Central State College in Ada, and in August 1941, in Oklahoma City, she and Mr. Williams were married.
The family included three children by the time Mrs. Williams first arrived in Saudi Arabia in 1959 - Jay, Carol and Ronald - all of whom attended the Abqaiq School and the American Community School in Beirut before completing their college studies in the U. S.
Active in community affairs in Abqaiq, where the family spent many years before returning to Dhahran in 1968, Tawanah was instrumental in reactivating the Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts there. An active sportswoman as well, she was a champion golfer, tennis player and bowler. Her special hobby was ceramics, and she was instrumental in establishing the ceramic group in Abqaiq and delighted in sharing her enthusiasm for the craft with adults and children alike.
The eldest Williams' son is married and lives in Schenectady, N.Y., and Ronald lives in San Jose, Calif. Carol, who is a project director for a community council center in the Boston area, was able to arrive in Dhahran in time to attend her mother's memorial service. [Photograph]
