Roland L. Cundall
Roland L. Cundall died in California on Oct. 8 as a result of complications following heart surgery performed Oct. 5 and 6. Funeral services were held Oct. 11 at the Chapel of Chimes in Oakland.
Well known throughout the company, Cundall had 36 years of service with Aramco and its affiliates, 12 of those years spent in Saudi Arabia.
Born in Milwaukee, Wis., Cundall graduated from Stanford University in 1922, with a degree in chemical engineering. The same year he joined the Standard Oil Company of California, working at the Richmond Refinery Laboratories. He advanced to Treating Plant foreman, chief refiner, superintendent, and manager of the Chemical Division. From 1943 to 1945 he was the first production manager for the newly formed Oronite Chemical Company in San Francisco.
Transferring to Aramco, Cundall arrived in Saudi Arabia in October, 1946, as superintendent of the Ras Tanura Refinery. In 1948 he came to Dhahran as assistant general manager. After that he was involved only indirectly with the production and refining of oil, heading such diversified activities as Aviation, Products Distribution, Materials Supply, Personnel, and Community Services. On Jan. 1, 1952, he became management coordinator in Executive Management and in August, 1956, manager of the Arab Development Department, the position he held at retirement, Feb. 1, 1958. For five months after his retirement he served that department as a consultant, departing Arabia on July 31, 1958.
Cundall is survived by his wife, Ruth, and two children, Marjorie, who was a nurse in Saudi Arabia from 1952 to 1954, and a son, Donald. Mrs. Cundall lives at 17250 High Road, Sonoma, Calif., 95476.
