Richard T. Thein
Richard Tun Thein, 76, Supervisor, Dhahran Saudi Arabia, passed away on April 22nd, 2015 at his residence in Escondido, located in San Diego County, California.
Born May 7th 1938 in Rangoon, Burma. He attended University of Rangoon for 2 years studying Engineering. But, he did not finish for the Burmese govt. sent him to study at University of Illinois under a full scholarship, where he majored in Computer Science. Because of the troubles in Burma and its eventual take over by a military dictatorship he decided not to return to Burma and never did. Being the first of his family to come to America and the second to youngest of nine brothers and sisters, he was able to bring the rest of his family to the USA.
He was employed by Control Data Corporation as a computer programmer and moved to Del Mar, San Diego. Most notable he worked on the computer systems for the F-14 Tomcat for Grumman in New York, and 2 years in Melbourne Australia for a wagering system. Upon returning from Australia he was hired by ARAMCO in 1979 and moved to Dhahran Saudi Arabia where he was a Project Engineer and braved scud missile attacks. He retired early in 1998.
In his last year he was diagnosed with a rare pineal tumor which was successfully removed by a revolutionary endoscopic surgery. Unfortunately, in the last month of his life, a rare complication was discovered. Cancer cells got into the meninges of the brain causing inflammation. He was in no pain and passed away peacefully in his sleep with his wife and son by him.
Richard Thein was an avid tennis player, golfer and lover of music. Always happy and jovial he loved to play his guitars at parties and family gatherings and dance crazy at parties. He will be sorely missed by all.
He is survived by his wife, son and daughter.
Funeral Service will be held at El Camino Memorial - Sorrento Valley. 5600 Carroll Canyon Rd. San Diego, CA. 92121 from 2pm to 5pm.
