Myra Baker Denton
On Saturday, September 25 at 00:25, Myra passed away at the age of 79. She had just celebrated her 27th wedding anniversary to Robert (Mike) Denton.
Myra was born in Glasgow, Scotland on August 9, 1943 to James and Elisabeth Baker. She grew up in a tough environment but that probably helped to earn her the nickname "She who must be obeyed" later in life. She worked for British Steel for years, but as the steel industry came on hard times, she looked for work in other places. The first was Iceland where she went alone, something of a stranger in a strange land. Later she would go to Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia, again, alone into the unknown. She was a brave and strong lass for sure.
She did fit in with her coworkers in Arabia and was a passionate member of the Folk Club and other activities. She was a key figure in the effort to bring soldiers into the Ras Tanura camp during the first Gulf War and also was involved in the U.S. Marines birthday celebration at Ras al Gar, Saudi Arabia November 8, 1990 where hundreds of Ras Tanura volunteers cooked up some homemade chili and provided entertainment for the troops.
After the war she volunteered to head the annual Sports Rally at Ras Tanura. She organized the games and the people involved in all sports. But she was not allowed in the refinery so a representative that could go into the refinery was needed. That was how she met her future husband Robert (Mike) Denton.
Myra is survived by her husband Mike, her sisters Isabel, Margaret, and Chris and her brother Sam.
