Mary Ann Long Hostetler (1)
Mary Ann Long Hostetler, 72, of Amherst, died on Saturday, April 6, 2013, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
She was born on Aug.11, 1940, in Passaic, N.J., the wife of William L. Hostetler and the daughter of the late Thomas Long and the late Anna Hanley Long.
Mary Ann attended St. Vincent’s Nursing School in New York, N.Y. She received a bachelor of science in health services from St. Joseph’s in Maine and a master of economics from the University of Oklahoma.
Early in her career Mary Ann was the chief operating room nurse at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York, N.Y. She then worked with Dr. Michael E. Debakey in Houston, Texas, and subsequently spent 15 years with Aramco in Saudi Arabia where she met her husband, William L. Hostetler.They were married in 1975. Most recently, Mary Ann was a supervisor of coders at Centra Health and retired in 2002.
She enjoyed playing bridge, reading and golfing and was an active volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and senior bingo. Mary Ann is a member of the Amherst Garden Club and has been on the Board for Habitat for Humanity and the Amherst Cancer Center.
Mary Ann is survived by her loving husband, Bill; and numerous loving cousins.
A mass of Christian burial was conducted Thursday, April 11, 2013, at Holy Cross Catholic Church with the Rev. Monsignor J. Kenneth Rush officiating. Inurnment followed at Sweet Briar College in Amherst at a later date. The family received friends Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at Whitten Monelison Chapel in Madison Heights.
