Linwood "Buddy" Lord
Linwood "Buddy" Lord, 65, died on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2010, from heart disease while on a family vacation in Washington State. He was planning to take in some Olympic atmosphere in Vancouver with his wife, son and daughter, and their families. He had been looking forward to this "once-in-a-lifetime trip" for nearly a year.
Buddy was born at home in Fryeburg, Maine, on February 16, 1944, to Eddie Lord and Marion Flint Lord Gain.
Along with his wife, Denise, Buddy led his life the way he wanted to - full of fun, culture, and adventure.
He was a proud 1962 graduate of Fryeburg Academy in Maine. He received his BS and MS from Gorham State Teachers' College (now University of Southern Maine) and began a 44-year teaching career teaching industrial arts and, more recently, technology education. He inspired and touched the lives of hundreds of students over the years who still think of him as their favorite teacher who let them make many of their own choices and joke around with him as if he were a good friend.
He began his career in the 1960's at Wells (Maine) High School until 1980 when he and his wife and daughter moved to Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia, where he taught industrial arts with the Aramco school system. It was there that he developed a passion for traveling the world. He continued his career in Haiti, Accomack County (Virginia), Fairfax County (Virginia), and, finally, spent the last 16 years at Marshall (Virginia) Middle School.
Buddy enjoyed traveling with Denise. Most recently, his destination of choice was Las Vegas where they remarried several times - once by "Elvis," his favorite entertainer, on their 40th anniversary.
He loved spending time with family and friends, telling stories about the good ol' days, spending summers at their cabin at Cedar Waters in New Hampshire, and spending long weekends at Avalon in West Virginia. He had an infectious, boisterous laugh which made those who knew him more joyful because of it.
Buddy was predeceased by his parents, Eddie Lord and Marion Gain; a sister, Eleanor Lord; and two special aunts, Thelma Flint Harmon and Rae Flint.
He was a wonderfully devoted husband to Denise, a proud and caring father to his daughter Stephanie Lauer (and husband, Jody) and his son David Lord (and wife, Terie), and a loving grandfather to Chance Lauer and Joshua Lord.
He leaves behind not only his immediate family but also cousins, in-laws, nieces and nephews, and many, many close friends and acquaintances who will never forget this "Maine-iac" with such a warm heart, great sense of humor, and zest for life. He never wanted people to be sad about his leaving this earth; he only wanted people to have a big bash and remember all the fun times they had with him. To honor him, three parties will be held in three different states:
- A keg party for all who knew him will be held in his honor at the Ruritan Club in Marshall, Virginia, on March 5, 2010, beginning at 4 p.m. (Happy Hour).
- Another party for his family and friends will be held at Denise's new home in Scarborough, Maine, beginning at noon on Thursday, April 1, 2010.
- The final party for friends will be held at Cedar Waters in New Hampshire sometime in July.
More information will be passed out prior to this celebration. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Fryeburg Academy Alumni and Development Office, In Memory of Buddy Lord - Class of 1962, 745 Main Street, Fryeburg, ME, 04037.
