Karl Koenig
Aramco annuitant Karl Koenig passed away October 20, 2007. Karl, who retired from the company in the late 80s as head of Specialty Dentistry, was well known among Abqaiq and Dhahran Brats who lived in the Kingdom during the 60s, 70s and 80s.
Karl and his wife Beverly became active in the community soon after their arrival in Abqaiq in 1967. She ran the summer student program while he helped with weekend trips to exotic places like Hofuf and the Rub al' Khali. Dhahran Brats will remember Karl not only for his participation in the Nativity as one of the Wise Men (who could forget bearded Karl riding that camel?), but also his weekends spent riding dirt bikes in the dunes. He had a magnetic personality and was always interested in talking to people both young and old.
A real adventurer, Karl once rode a camel across the Rub al-Khali from Abqaiq to Riyadh. On other excursions he and Bev drove cross-country all the way to Yemen in their SUV, they hired a car and driver in Mali and drove three days through small villages to reach Timbuktu, they sailed all night in a dhow in Indonesia to see the Komodo dragons, and Karl and his son Steve once hiked to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Members of the Traveler's Century Club, he and Beverly visited over 100 countries during their years exploring the world.
Karl is survived by his wife Beverly Koenig, 1230 Miraleste Lane, San Luis Obispo, CA, 93401; Bkkk98@charter.net; daughters Lori, Barbara "CB" Edwards, Sheree Edwards-Deragon, and son Steve.
