MAHON, Joseph Anthony 83, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 15, at Suncoast Hospice, Woodside.

Joe was born in Ardmore, PA, on Aug. 16, 1926. He earned degrees in Naval Science and Mechanical Engineering from Villanova University and served in the U.S. Navy at Norfolk, VA. After graduation, he worked for Philadelphia Electric before moving to New York City to take a position with the Arabian American Oil Company (Aramco).

 In 1952 he was transferred to Saudi Arabia where he remained until his retirement as Senior Vice President - Corporate Services in 1982.
 
Joe and his wife Ruth moved to St. Petersburg where they became active in the community. Joe served as president of the Playa Escondida Condo Association and was for many years the go-to person for maintenance issues at Playa Escondida.

He received an "Above and Beyond" award from the mayor of St. Pete Beach in 1999 for his advocacy of building a high bridge for the Pinellas Bayway. Qualified as a Certified Financial Planner and Enrolled Agent, he taught annual courses on tax preparation sponsored by the AARP and the IRS. He was a leader of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program at the Enoch Davis Center in St. Pete and for the past year had worked towards having Enoch Davis certified as a senior center.
 
 In 2009, he was inducted into the Senior Hall of Fame by the mayor of St. Petersburg for "distinguished efforts benefitting the entire community."

Survivors include his wife Ruth; children Richard, Michael, Robert and Elizabeth; grandchildren Christopher and Casey; and sister Patricia Walker.
 
 A gathering to celebrate Joe's life will be held at the Isla Del Sol Yacht & Country Club, 6000 Sun Boulevard, St. Petersburg on Friday, May 7 from 2-4pm.
 
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Suncoast Hospice Foundation.
