Johnnie "John" Polk Murphy, 76, known as J.P. to friends and family, passed away the 25th of August, 2010, in North Austin Medical Center after losing his four month battle to a sever attack of shingles. J.P. was born on October 31, 1933, in Fort Worth, Texas, to Charlie T. and Mattie Lou (Biggie) Murphy.

J.P. attended grade school in Electra, Texas, and was a graduate of the University of Texas, with a degree in Microbiology. He had been employed by the Arabian-American Oil Company, the University of Texas, (retired from) the Texas State Health Department, and was an avid volunteer fireman for 38 years with Travis County ESD-4. John put 35 years of service toward the TSHD and retired as the Deputy Director to Vital Statistics department.

He was survived by his siblings, Charles W. Murphy, Johnnie Huey, Connie McKelvey, and Sara Smith; and his nieces, Miyuki Murphy, Mika Murphy, and Michele Murphy.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family beginning at six o'clock in the evening on the 29th of August in the Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar, Austin.

The funeral service is to be conducted at two o'clock in the afternoon on Monday, the 30th of August, at Cook-Walden Funeral Home. Graveside services will be conducted in Electra, Texas, at two o'clock in the afternoon on Tuesday, the 31st of August.

In lieu of flowers and the customary remembrances, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to Travis County ESD-4 or the charity of your choice.
