John R. McDaniel
John R. McDaniel was born in Detroit, MI to Gertrude and Leroy McDaniel. He graduated from Bowling Green State University in June 1955 with a BA in English and German. He held an Undergraduate Assistantship in the Dept. of Foreign Languages and received a Gamma Epsilon Award for Excellence in German. He married his college sweetheart in the college chapel in 1954. After graduation he was employed by Marathon Oil Co. in Findlay, Ohio as a feature and editorial writer for the company magazine. He went on to be a Personnel Representative and in 1963 moved his family to Tripoli, Libya, N. Africa where he spent his most enjoyable work years as a Personnel Supervisor over an international work force of approximately 1500 employees. In 1967 he became Director of Personnel Services at the London office of Eaton Corp., returning to the US in 1968. In 1971 John began a 30 year career as a residential rental property entrepreneur. In 1978 international travel again beckoned and he and his wife traveled to Saudi Arabia where John worked for Aramco Oil Co. in personnel management. Retiring in 1980 they moved to Cochranton, PA where he enjoyed raising organic beef and earned organic certification for his farm from the PA Assoc. of Sustainable Agriculture. John's hobbies were wine making, ice skating, gardening and international travel. John was preceded in death by his parents and an older brother. James E. McDaniel. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Patricia and their three children, Lisa McDaniel-Hutchings (Michael) of Tucson, AZ; Brett of Dallas, TX, and Kurt (Jordana) of N. Potomac, MD; two granddaughters, Rebecca and Sara McDaniel-Hutchings; a brother, Charles (Marilyn) of PA and a sister, Catherine Smith of TN. John was a long time member of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Meadville, PA. A Celebration of John's life will be held at 5:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tucson on E. 22d St., Saturday, October 23, 2010. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association Arrangements are by Adair Funeral Homes, Dodge Chapel.
