Jeff Johnston
Jeffrey Ian Johnston, 51, passed away on September 15, 2009 after a long illness.
He was born in Garberville, California October 12, 1957. Jeff had a fun and adventurous childhood traveling the world with his family. Together with his parents and brothers he lived in San Diego, New Orleans, Arizona and Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.
It was in Dhahran that Jeff made the friends he would have throughout his life. Like other expatriate children, Jeff found that the bonds produced when living in communities abroad run very deep. He identified strongly with the culture of the oil camps in which he grew up, as well as that of the host country.
After graduating the ninth grade in Dhahran, Jeff attended The Webb School in Claremont, California, before continuing his education at San Diego State University. He started a successful career in construction management in the mid 1980s and over the years worked for companies such as T.B. Penick, Koll Construction and RG Petty.
Jeff married in 1990; he and his wife Gaby resided in North County in Rancho Penasquitos and Poway. He enjoyed a wonderful circle of friends and family. Jeff was an avid reader and loved a variety of music. He lived for his vacations which usually involved sailing, scuba diving and hiking in such places as Australia, Fiji, Jamaica, British Virgin Islands, Antigua and annual visits to Garland's Lodge in Sedona Arizona.
He will be remembered by his brothers, Cameron and Douglas, sister-in-law Anne, former wife Gaby, nieces Brooklyn and Ashleigh, and numerous aunts and cousins with great love and affection. He is predeceased in death by his parents Ian and Barbara, father-in-law Ray Mergenthal, his uncle Jerry Dunn, and grandparents William and Lorine Dunn, and Richard and Gladys Johnston.
There will be a remembrance on November 14, 2009, in El Cajon, California.
