Geraldine Hilliard Newsman
Memorial services for Geraldine Hilliard Newsman, 80, of Onalaska will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 2011, in the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Onalaska, with the Rev. Harold Isaacs officiating. She was born Aug. 7, 1930 in Port Arthur, the daughter of Jesse W. Hilliard and Effie Wooley Hil-liard, and died April 7, 2011 in Conroe. She graduated in 1952 from Lillie Jolly School of Nursing, Memorial Hospital in Houston, and began a career in nursing which included experience as a surgical nurse, an occupational health nurse for NASA, and a very long career in industrial nursing at companies including Houston Lighting and Power, Goodyear, and Arabian American Oil Company (ARAMCO). She was very active in the Memorial Hospital alumni association and served as president of the Houston Area Association of Industrial Nurses. She was a volunteer with the American Red Cross, and the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council, as well as other organizations. A long-time member of First Baptist Church of Deer Park, Mrs. Newsman also volunteered as a Sunday school teacher. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Joseph R. Newman of Onalaska; two daughters, Jerilyn Newman Pennell and husband David of Austin and Joellen Newman Tipton and husband Cullen of Onalaska; grandchildren, Erin Pennell Zamore, Joel Pennell, Connor Tipton and Kaitlyn Tipton and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her honor to the American Red Cross or the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Cochran Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
