Eugene "Gene" Gordon Norberg, 78, of Tower, died Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at the Virginia Arrowhead Health Care Center.

He was born on July 25, 1922, to Fritz and Lillian (Swanson) Norberg in Rainy River, Ontario, Canada. He grew up and attended school in Tower. Before graduating from Tower-Soudan High School in 1942, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. Following high school, he was employed at a defense plant in Minneapolis during World War II. After the war, he was contracted by Aramco Oil Company in Arabia and Guam for several years. He was united in marriage to Nancy Sunne on June 28, 1953, in Baudette, Minn. He was employed by U.S. Steel at the Soudan Underground Mine until 1962. He then worked at the Ely Pioneer Mine and finally at Minntac as a welder, until his retirement in 1983. He was a member of the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tower, where he served on the church council, the Mountain Iron Senior Citizens, and the Tower Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed woods work, planting and organizing tree planting efforts, playing cribbage, table-tennis, cross-country skiing, playing and singing old time music, especially polkas and waltzes, visiting with friends, and family get-togethers.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy; four daughters, Barbara (Richard) Andresen of Duluth, Lois Norberg of Batavia, Ill., Shirley (Kevin) Burritt of Mountain Iron, and Patti (Peter) Stoddard of Hibbing; a son, Eric (Carol) Norberg of Duluth; 10 grandchildren, Christopher and Tamara Jamnick, Josie, Beth, and Kim Norberg, Abigail and Austin Burritt, Rachel Stoddard, and Brian and Natalie Norberg; a sister, Mildred (Roy) Rostvold of Hibbing; and a brother-in-law, Paul Palo of Tower.

He was preceded in death by three grandchildren, Arlene, Bridget, and Laura; a sister, Elinor; infant sisters Ethel and Irene; an infant brother, Roy; and his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tower. The Rev. Brenda Pfeifly and the Rev. Kristen M. Foster will be officiating. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia, and will continue for one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Tower.
