Edwin W. Hannay
Edwin W. Hannay, Marine Superintendent, Ras Tanura Marine division, died unexpectedly, Saturday, Aug. 19, in Copenhagen, while en route back to Ras Tanura from long vacation.
Hannay's first job was with the Los Angeles Steamship Co. in 1927. Later he worked at the Bethlehem Shipyard in San Pedro, Calif., as a machinist, then signed with the Los Angeles Shipyard. He sailed with Matson Lines, the old Dollar Line, The Grace Line, Pacific Tankers, Socal and the Penn Co. He served aboard troopships and victory ships during World War II and was commended by the State Department for his outfitting of the United States Navy hospital ship Mercy.
Hannay was a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, and was appointed surveyor, American Bureau of Shipping, Lloyd's Register of Ships. He held jobs with the Kaiser Shipyards, working up to Marine Supervisor.
He arrived in Saudi Arabia in May, 1948, and was Port Engineer until he was appointed Marine Superintendent in 1956.
Surviving Hannay are his wife, Reba, a son Edwin in the United States, and a daughter, Lisa. [Photograph]
