"It was the summer of 1964. Smith and I were 17, working as apprentice divers for the freshly established Al Gossaibi Diving Services, the brain child of the legendary Dee McVey. Dee had been the lead diver and manager of undersea operations for all of Bechtel’s offshore projects since the mid-fifties. When Bechtel finished up, Dee recognized a great business opportunity and set up the first Saudi commercial diving operation in the Gulf with his partner Mohammed Al-Gosaibi."
"Scud Kids remember growing up in a little town on the edge of a desert beside the sea with cookie-cutter houses and friends who became family. We remember the Gulf War when we carried gas masks to school and hid beneath our desks while air raid sirens wailed overhead. We remember the taste of our favorite MRE’s and some of us still have drawstring camo hats hanging in our closets. Scud Kids will always remember that war could light up the night sky with flashes so bright they drowned out the stars."
Insta-Lebanon: My Trip in Pictures by Mary Ashkar
"Lebanon has never been my home for longer than a few weeks on vacation, but it is where my parents and family are from. It is my home and native country. A country of about 4 million people in an area of 10,452 sq kms. Lebanon’s history has included Romans, Phoenicians, Ottomans, and a Civil War. The most important features of Lebanon for me are the 3 languages most Lebanese speak (almost every spoken sentence includes Arabic, French, and English words), Beirut's once-nickname as the Paris of the Middle East, the many religious sects, and the undeniable joie de vivre of the Lebanese people."
