Here in Winnipeg, the days are getting longer, the sun is shining, and spring is right around the corner! We’ve enjoyed a winter term filled with achievements and adventures: in the past month, students competed in debating tournaments in Bermuda, performed a three-night major production, received numerous gold medals in musical efforts, and celebrated sporting victories.
At St. John's-Ravenscourt School, we are proud to provide a respectul learning community for our students that inspires academic excellence, creativity, and a commitment to active healthy living and social responsibility in order to develop compassionate, confidant leaders.
We’re excited for a new term of new possibilities, and to continue helping our students strive to fulfill their potential, to engage in a wealth of opportunities in academics, arts, athletics and service, and to embrace a new season of change and innovation.
The time to apply is now: currently, only one spot remains for boys in either Grade 9 or 10, and we have four places for girls in Grades 8-10.
Last week, the curtain came down on SJR’s annual Rock Show. Over the past 27 years, over 1,500 students have lived out their dream of taking to the stage and becoming a rock star. For three nights, audiences were entranced by the students’ exuberance and talent, which brought tears to eyes and audiences to their feet!
At the end of February, Grade 12 Leadership students hosted an action-packed conference open to all Manitoba students in Grades 9-11. The students created this conference to inspire others to make a positive change in their community. The Leadership program’s shared values are trust, respect, communication and open-mindedness, and by using these pillars, they hoped to inspire the leaders of tomorrow. 93 students from 12 schools attended the conference, and many advisors from other schools commented on how impressed they were.
SJR has celebrated success in sport recently: The Varsity Girls’ soccer team are the WYSA Indoor High School ‘B’ Side City Champions. The Varsity Boys’ Basketball team are the SCAC Champions, and our U14 Boys’ basketball team, undefeated in the league all season, are now PTAA league champions. We’re proud of all the SJR athletes who have represented our School so well this term!
Boarding at SJR offers students a true home away from home, with a close-knit community spirit and countless group activities throughout the year. February may have been chilly, but it didn't prevent our group of boarders from exploring and adventuring!
Isabel, Fernanda and Paulina write about their long weekend adventure in The Pas, Manitoba:
"Over the long weekend, we went home with boarders Jack and Anna, to The Pas, a northern city in Manitoba. When we first arrived, it felt like home. Jack and Anna’s parents were so nice and warm to us, that they made us feel like home. The town is beautiful; it’s full of forests and farmlands. Their house is outside the city, surrounded by nature.
On the first day, we went to the Trapper’s Festival where we had the chance to see the start of the dog race. We felt like we were in a movie with all the dogs barking and the shotgun to begin the race. After that, we went to a Craft Show where we bought cinnamon honey and local jellies. On the second day we went snowmobiling and baked macaroons and a delicious apple pie with their mom. We had a musical weekend as we watched Mamma Mia and Grease! Finally, on our last day, we enjoyed playing with the snow like never before! We went tobogganing to a mountain and then we climbed it to the top… it was very tiring but 100% worth it. This has been our greatest experience in Canada!"
It is a testament to the strength of our community that our alumni continue to be as passionate and involved as they are in their years after graduation. St. John’s-Ravenscourt has produced 18 Rhodes Scholars, as well as numerous otherwise notable alumni. This month, we are proud to shine the spotlight on Hillary Samson ’86.
In addition to owning her own consulting company, in which she offers her services as a COO on-demand, Hillary is COO and part-owner of Satya Organic Skin Care, a USDA Certified organic eczema balm sold in over 400 stores across Canada, offering a natural, safe alternative to cortical steroids. Hillary's involvement with Satya has brought the company to record-breaking sales: Using effective marketing and creating awareness of the product, sales in two days matched combined sales of the previous year alone. The company is also one of only five Canadian ventures to receive the SheEO grant.
Hillary was very excited to hear about our business program at SJR, and has potential plans for a business weekend in the 2017-18 academic year!
We’re proud that these exciting success stories began right here, and are consistently proud and excited to see what the future brings to all our students.
