Khobar Shopping Bus
Thursday Khobar Shopping Bus

On the morning of Thursday, June 3, Houston Educators were treated to a bit of Saudi commerce as they visited Al-Rashid Mall in Al-Khobar. They were all waiting at the front door of Eastern Jewelry at 8:50 for the doors to open. After much looking, bargaining and purchasing, they left the shop with at least 20 name necklaces, numerous earrings, bangles and chains. They continued around the mall, stopping at the Silver Museum, Jarir Bookstore, Middle East artifact stores and of course Starbuck’s Coffee.

By noon, they gathered at the “1001 Nights” restaurant on the third floor for a very nicely prepared traditional Lebanese luncheon. All agree that they have gained at least ten pounds during the first four days of the tour.

Al-Khobar is a coastal town on the eastern seaboard of Saudi Arabia. Closely connected throughout history with Dammam and Dhahran, it is one of three main cities in the Eastern Province.  Historically, Al-Khobar was a port town subsisting mainly on a heritage of fishing.  However with the discovery of oil, it has become a major industrial port and is now the commercial hub of the Eastern Province holding an important role in the national economy.

Saudi gold merchants have made it their business to show off the world's most precious metal for its lustrous beauty, versatility, rarity and indestructibility.  In the Gold Souq shop after shop of gold merchants line the street.  Each shop is draped in gold, and offers only the highest quality (18-24 karat) and brilliant craftsmanship.

The Al-Rashid Mall is the one of the largest malls in Saudi Arabia.  Designed to typify traditional Saudi palaces from the exterior, it offers modern comfort, six major department stores, more than 600 specialty shops, entertainment, food courts, restaurants and amusement arcades. Guests enjoyed lunch at the mall.

Following lunch, the tour departed for the Aramco Beach for a relaxing afternoon and barbeque. It was a beautiful, cool evening with a comfortable breeze.

They were served kafta, other Arab delicacies and better than these, the group was able to “experience” really tasty Shwarmas.

It turned out to be a very relaxing evening watching the sun set behind the Half Moon Bay dunes and the full moon rise.
