You have your Go Bag ready, but what about your home? Do you have enough food and water to last 3 days? Do you have a flashlight and batteries? Just like hurricane season in Texas or winter in Boston, be prepared in the case of any emergency. Create a disaster kit that includes:

  • Food and water for 72 hours - this includes baby food/formula. Make sure you have enough for every person in the family
  • Battery Powered Radio or Crank Radio
  • Flashlight and Batteries
  • First Aid Kit
  • Dust mask, plastic sheeting and duct tape for shelter-in-place
  • Sanitizing hand wipes, garbage bags for personal sanitation
  • Wrench/pliers to turn off utilities
  • Cell phone and charger (solar charger)

Be sure to maintain your kit by following these steps.

  • Keep your kit in a cool/dry place.
  • Make sure to keep any stored food in metal containers to keep out pests.
  • Change your food and water supplies every six months.
  • Rethink your kit if the needs of your family change - i.e. new baby or medical issues.

Think about having a kit for work as well. Is there sufficient food and water at your office? Do you have a change of clothes and a flashlight? You should be prepared to spend at least 24 hours at your office. For a complete list of what to have in your Supplies kit, see that attached handout.
